While protecting our borders from foreign products and peoples, Trump is also responsible for importing a political style more commonly found in our neighbors to the south.
“The Gospel tells us constantly to risk a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from self-giving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. The Son of God, by becoming flesh, summoned us to the revolution of tenderness.”—Pope Francis (Evangelii Gaudium 72)
The only Republicans who don’t see this are the ones who were never really Republicans in the first place or who adopt a win-at-all costs mentality, even if the cost is the country and their party. Trump is the anti-Lincoln, the anti-TR, the anti-Ike, the anti-Reagan. He is the repudiation of everything good that the Republican Party has brought and the embodiment of all of its worst tendencies. Regardless of how you feel about HRC- and you have never heard me endorse her- Trump is the more serious threat, both to the country and the GOP as a party. Most likely, he will lead to large GOP losses in the fall. Even worse for the GOP, he could win and ruin the image of the GOP for a generation. Republicans need to cut their losses and work to rebuild the party for 2018 and 2020.
